Florida State checked back in the top-5 of the Associated Press Top 25 Poll in the latest poll release early Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles moved up from No. 6 to claim No. 5 for the first time since entering their Week 3 matchup last season with No. 1 Oklahoma.
They went on to lose that game, 23-13.
The Seminoles aren’t the only team ranked No. 5 this week. They are tied with the Sooners.
FSU’s rise through the polls was an intriguing one. After Saturday night’s 55-0, weather-shortened romp over Football Championship Subdivision team Savannah State, there were questions over just how good the Seminoles really were. It was their second win over an FCS program in consecutive weeks. Saturday’s game didn’t even go the full four quarters after officials decided to end it with 8:59 remaining in the third quarter. Regardless, both victories over lower classified teams were decided by a combined score of 124-3.
The Seminoles have been ranked No. 5 or higher four times since 2005. Two of those times they were ranked No. 5 came last year. They moved from No. 6 to No. 5 following wins over Louisiana-Monroe and Charleston Southern to open the 2011 season.
FSU began this season ranked No. 7 in both the AP and USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
